West Ham celebrate their winner

West Ham left it late before earning a place in the last eight of the Carling Cup with a goal from Carlton Cole.

Coventry played the match at a fast pace and deservedly took the lead when Jay Tabb stole in at the back post to nod in Isaac Osbourne's flighted pass.

But West Ham were level within three minutes when Marcus Hall deflected Luis Boa Morte's shot into his own net.

And the visitors snatched victory in the third minute of added time when ...

Lee Wilkie turned the ball home from close range after 27 minutes, as the Ibrox side largely failed to trouble the Tangerines in the first half.

Rangers briefly came to life and Daniel Cousin equalised from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

However United captain Barry Robson responded with another penalty two minutes later for a deserved win.

Steve Staunton has reportedly been axed as Republic of Ireland manager following an emergency meeting of the Irish Football Association on Tuesday.

Staunton, who took over from Brian Kerr in January 2006, had been under pressure after poor performances in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Hopes of making the finals ended when his side could only manage a 1-1 draw with Cyprus last Wednesday.

Former Leeds and Aston Villa boss David O'Leary is the favourite to take over.

Emre and Obafemi Martins celebrate Newcastle's opener

Tottenham remain in the bottom three of the Premier League after some slack defending allowed Newcastle to triumph.

Abdoulaye Faye headed against the post early on for the Magpies, who took the lead when Michael Dawson's mistake let in Obafemi Martins to fire home.

Dawson also gave Claudio Cacapa room to nod a second goal after half-time.

(1600 BST)

Will this game be tougher than the match against Estonia at Wembley? Just slightly!

Playing on a plastic surface is a definite advantage for Russia.

The fixture is being played at a great stadium and I think it is a disgrace they will be using an artificial surface - I do not understand why they do not have under-soil heating which would melt the snow before it hardened.

I think the surface will have an effect on tactics. As you a ...

Accountants say Linfield could lose around £30million if Northern Ireland's home matches are no longer staged at the club's Windsor Park ground.

The IFA wants to end a deal signed in 1984, stating that all games would be played at Windsor for 104 years.

The Irish League club lodged a Statement of Claim on Thursday as a follow-up to a High Court writ.

The club said they would rather settle without going to court but had to look after the interests of their members.

A man who drunkenly assaulted Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson at a railway station has been jailed for 15 months.

Kevin Reynolds, 44, admitted punching Sir Alex in the groin before headbutting a police community support officer at Euston station last month.

Reynolds, originally from Fife, Scotland, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court.

Sir Alex is not believed to have been badly hurt during the incident.

SATURDAY'S EURO 2008 QUALIFIERS

England v Estonia

(1500 BST)

Lets be honest - even at their very best Estonia are distinctly average.

Most of the focus this week seems to be on England's game against Russia in Moscow next Wednesday.

With this in mind, there has been plenty of speculation that boss Steve McClaren will make changes to the team that beat Russia in their previous match at Wembley.

The suggestion is that McClaren ...
